Treating small hive beetles

Jun. 8, 2016

Today, I spread some diatomaceous earth around the hive. I spotted 2 dead beetles on my mite board and about 10 crawling in the hive. I've ordered a trap and I hope it arrives soon. Otherwise, everything still looks good. I knocked off what I thought might be a queen cell but it was full of honey! Yum!

Returned from trip to find...

Hive beatles!

I returned from my 6- day trip and couldn't wait to inspect my Pesto hive. I also looked at my mite board and discovered several dead hive beatles. I didn't really know what to look for on the frames since what I have seen has been in books. Looked like the queen had laid eggs and they were capped. I'm not sure if I said that correctly or used correct termination. All of the sugar syrup was gone. Today, I refilled the sugar syrup and did a more thourough inspection. This is when I spoitted several live hive beatles. I'll need advice on how to rid the hive of the beatles and then remedy this problem in the next few days. Also, the queen has moved over to the 5th frame. Not sure whatthis means. Otherwise, the frames looked great and I could see larvae in the cells (yea!) (See picture). Also, I spotted one bee doing the waggle dance and was able to video it. So cute. You can go to my Instagram page @bsbeesinbama to see the video. I am literally learning something new daily! Such a fun hobby.

Bee Advice Needed

May. 31, 2016

Advice needed: so I inspected my hive again this morning, found my queen, but I can't tell what's going on. It looks like some cells have clear gel in them, then some have orange (pollen) but I can't really see if she is laying eggs. Leaving the hive alone for a while. Any advice from my fellow beeks?

Empty Queen cage

May. 29, 2016

This morning I inspected the hive to look for the queen. She had not been released as of yesterday. Today, I found her cage to be completely empty but had some propolis on the outside so I knew she had been released. It took me a very long time to locate her and I was beginning to panic. She is marked with a white dot on her head but I actually noticed her long body first, before seeing the white dot ( which was almost gone). Needless to say, I was very relieved and now can give the bees a few days to do their thing!

My first entry

May. 29, 2016

 ðŸ¤ªHi all,

This is my very first blog! I'm so excited to be sharing with you one of the best privileges and really something that I've been wanting to try for a long time....beekeeping! I live in West Central Alabama and can't wait for my bees to arrive! For months, I have been preparing for the arrival of the bees but nothing really prepares you for the sound of about 10,000 buzzing creatures. I've never been really scared of insects so this was exciting and not at all scary but I understand some folks are really afraid of bees (you shouldn't be a beekeeper, ha!)

I had read many books, watched many many videos (I love youtube) and talked with several beekeepers in order to learn all I could before they arrived. The day I actually called to place the order, I just couldnt believe I really did it!

The cost is one thing (about 300$-400$) but then you have to plan for many different scenarios. You really won't know until they arrive and you actually begin to keep the bees.

I'll be posting more information in the future for those of you thirsting for knowledge, as I am, about these fascinataing little creatures.
